Proud to Be British

falklandsSo, 99.8%, all but three of the voting population of the Falkland Islands overwhelming mandated to continue as an autonomous British Overseas Territory. So, back off Argentina and stick that in your pipe, President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner!

It is called “Self-Determination”.

A British population has lived on these islands since 1833, the same year in which slavery was abolished in the UK. This makes the territory as old as Chile (1833), and older than Germany (1871) and Italy (1861). The Falkland Islanders are made up almost entirely of native-born people,  70% of which claim a British heritage, with a few French, Gibraltarians and Scandinavians thrown in. The very few Argentinians are mostly married to Brits. Even the few immigrants are non-Argentinians, being from the UK, St Helena and Chile.

And you can forget claims of the UK acting as a colonial power who invaded back in 1833. There is absolutely no evidence that there were any indigenous populations on the Islands before the British settlement was founded. Unlike Argentina, of course. The reason you speak Spanish is because you were a former Spanish colony, with the colonists all but eliminating the native populations.

And, let’s not forget that Argentina illegally invaded the Islands on 2nd April 1982 before surrendering to British forces just two months later, with a loss of 255 British soldiers, sailors and airmen; 649 Argentinians; and, 3 Falkland Islanders. The conflict was bravely won. There was a heavy medal tally, including two posthumous Victoria Crosses for Lt. Colonel H. Jones O.B.E and Sgt I.J. McKay of the Parachute regiment and a further fifteen medals for bravery awarded posthumously.surrender

So, the Falklands remain British. The Islanders themselves have determined this themselves. So, back off Argentina and concentrate on building friendly relations with a neighbour rather than burning our flag, and coveting our natural resources. Your claims are as barmy as Spain wanting Gibraltar back 😉 or us giving Bermuda to the US and Ascension to Brazil……

Respect the people for they have spoken.

It wont make any difference to Frau Kirchner but it’s a great result. It also won’t make any difference to Obama and that Clinton woman either.
