Crewe Station

In his hilarious book, Pies and Prejudice, Stuart Maconie quite correctly, in my opinion, describes Crewe as where the mythical North of England begins. It is well worth a read.

Now Crewe itself is not somewhere that I would recommend. Known only for its railway station, being the former home of Rolls Royce, the current home of Bentley, and a university that dishonestly masquerades as being in Manchester.

All those foreign students arriving at Crewe station for the first time and trudging the half mile or so to the campus of Manchester Metropolitan University must be sadly disappointed. Thankfully there is a plethora of Bargain Booze outlets to help them drain their sorrows. But, despite a disappointing town centre where M&S remains king, Crewe, or at least the cold, damp platforms of the west coast line thronged with trainspotters and depressed foreign students, remains a Mecca for spotting minor celebrities.

On my last three trips via Crewe to or from London Euston I have spotted Timmy Mallet – he of the Elton John like spectacles, tongue curling irritation of 80s children’s TV – conspicuously trying to be noticed and recognized on a crowded platform; Julia Bradbury – the very easy on the eye shoe fetishist and presenter of Watchdog and Countryfile – minding her business in First Class en route to Chester; and, Phil The Power Taylor – runner up Sports Personality of the Year 2010 and world darts champion – who greeted me as if I knew him as we both exited the train at Crewe.

As with Julia, I suspect the others were just passing through…
