And Now The Other Foot…….
I have a high degree of sympathy for Israel. This is a tiny nation, just forty miles or so across, and surrounded by aggressors. The country has, for years now, lived under the constant threat of war and has been on the receiving end of far too many suicide bombings and missile attacks. Consequently, the nation is almost always on war-readiness with much of its population either serving or ready to be called up from the reserves at a moment’s notice. It was certainly very tense when I was last there – read about that here.
That said, they really do not do themselves any favours. They repeatedly shoot themselves in the foot from a PR perspective. Many of their actions lead to more Hamas recruits; more Arabs and Palestinians willing to die for the liberation of THEIR homeland. Sometimes, you get the sense that they are being deliberately provocative in order to maintain/raise tensions in the region so that they can justify further military action and harsher controls over the occupied territories such as Gaza.
How can they justify an attack on a flotilla of ships ferrying aid supplies to Gaza. An attack using special forces, not customs officials, nor the coastguard, and, in international waters. You can read about it here. I am sure that the marines were provoked and did fear for their own lives. BUT, THEY SHOULDN’T HAVE BEEN THERE IN THE FIRST PLACE.
Does the word “proportionate” not exist in Hebrew?
Israel, shame on you. USA, shame on you too for not condemning them as clearly as you should have done for a foolish and provocative act.
