Cooking Up A Storm!

Did anyone else out there witness the demise of Delia Smith last night on her new BBC 2 Programme? Quite possibly I think that dementia might be kicking in. That or the booze.

Now don’t get me wrong, I have a lot to thank Delia for. You don’t get an OBE at the age of 66 and sell 18 million cookery books (and, therefore, outselling Nigel Slater, Jamie Oliver and Gordon Ramsay), without being successful. Her recipes have rescued many a Christmas dinner in our household and her “How To Cook” taught at least two of my sister-in-laws the joy of cooking and eating as well as increasing the sale of eggs by 10% overnight and causing most shops to see-out of omelette pans.

I even quite fancied her when she was on “Multi-Coloured Swapshop”, being the first female chef on children’s TV, before I gave my heart away to Emma Forbes. And, having seen her, Delia that is, modelling bathing costumes in this week’s Radio Times, I can easily see why I did. emma

Even the rather camp Nigel Slater (who is a chef I admire greatly) seemed to have a soft spot for ol’ Delia, talking at one point about receiving “permission from Headmistress”. I wouldn’t have put him down as being into S&M. It takes all sorts.

However, I am now beginning to believe that the drink-fuelled rant at a Norwich City football game may not have been a one off. She must have been boozed up when she made last night’s show, surely. For, as far as I can tell, it had next to nothing to do with proper cooking or even cheating at cooking as she claimed. How many of us put quails eggs in our fish pies? How many of us have capers, cornichons and walnuts on our shelves? How many put potato into our chocolate cakes? How many of us would pour a sauce that looked like cat sick over spiced potato wedges, boiled eggs, and olives?

Perhaps the most disappointing thing about last night was her constant use of frozen mashed potato. Why didn’t she just show her audience how to make perfectly good mash? It takes just 25 minutes to peel, boil, and mash a potato and with a little butter, milk and seasoning it is quite delicious. The frozen monstrosities that Delia was hawking took 40 minutes to cook. Where is the sense in that?

Maybe it is the lowly position of Norwich that has got her down. Maybe it is the realisation that she has been usurped in many male eyes by the beauty of Nigella Lawson (admittedly fading), and Tana Ramsay (Gordon’s much easier on the eye wife), or, for our American cousins, Giada de Laurentiis and Rachel Ray.

How the mighty have fallen.  nigella

Nigella’s beauty is not fading… she simply is getting a bit porky from too much finger licking and eating cake in the middle of the night. I have actually met Nigella in person and can tell you she is actually much better looking in person then she is on the telly.

I felt like I was being lectured by Delia, but not in a good way a la Nigella. There was something vaguely sinister about it all. As you point out, perhaps this is the real Delia (the anti-Delia) after all.

I totally agree. It made me wonder does she actually really cook like that? I couldn’t quite believe it, whereas if you take Jamie Oliver mucking around in his garden with his weird gardener bloke and having a quick impromptu barbie on a couple of upturned plant pots that he actually does do that even when the cameras arn’t on him. And like you say about Nigella, I suspect she spends a lot of her time (to much?) licking her fingers in fridges whether she’s being filmed or not.

I’ve never been a fan of Delia, she lost me year’s ago when I saw her on TV telling us how to make toast! But this has definitely put the nail in the coffin.

Very Interesting Post of yours – I hardly watch TV these – but am now leading an online protest about this famous woman’s approach – surely she is doing us all a dis -service !

Thanks for your comment on my blog posting on the same subject. I don’t think she’s lost it – she’s probably just got herself a new business manager.

He told her it was all about mass market, supermarket deals, branding etc – showed her what Jamie was making on his shaker gizmo and tempted her with a slice of it all.

It’s all down to cash and tie ins. But it’s badly done. Really badly – and you’re right – eggs, olives and chips? Whaaat?

Hiya. Thanks for your comment on my post. Glad I missed the Delia fiasco. Really, frozen mashed potato? That’s insane. I do have cornichons in my fridge though, and some walnuts. Have to confess I have never done quail’s eggs mind you.
She is bonkers, absolutely bonkers and a bit sinister in my humble opinion…

You explain it so much better than me!
I saw the tail end of the prog when she was being lovey-dovey to her other half and I cringed!
She has got it sooo wrong!

That’s sisters-in-law, middleman. Just because Delia’s now appealing to the unwashed masses is no reason for you to slum it with her…

Oh my goodness, I don’t intend to be rude, but frozen mash and quail eggs in fish pies makes me happy to be an American who lives on Indian food; my husband is Brahmin Hindu.

I do, however, enjoy hot tea at all the appropriate times of the day–and I love my biscuits!!

Bless her. I think she started losing the plot when she dedicated an entire episode to bread…and one to eggs a couple of years ago.

    Poor ol’ Delia…
