Do You Believe In Ghosts?

ghost

Do you believe in ghosts? I do. I believe I have seen one, and been in the presence of at least two others.

Once was when I was quite young and at home in Erdington. Dad was not home from work yet and mom and my sister, J, were upstairs doing something girlie. I was watching a report on the local Midlands news programme, which was investigating hauntings in local factories. The interviewer was talking to two “witnesses”. As I watched a shadowy figure of a woman appeared behind the “witnesses”. I thought it was a joke. A special effect. I called upstairs to my mom and sister, but, the article had finished by the time they got downstairs.

My story was, however, corroborated the following day on the same news programme. They had received a number of complaints by other viewers who had reported seeing the “bad taste” special effect of the ghostly woman. But, the programme claimed innocence and replayed the piece, which this time was “spirit” free. Spooky.

Perhaps the best example of things going bump in the night was at the first house which C and I rented together in Alderley Edge. An old Victorian mid-terrace cottage. C woke in the night on more than one occasion claiming to have seen an old bearded man stood at the foot of our bed. Spooky. And no, I was neither bearded nor old at this time.

In the same property, strange things would happen in the kitchen. Drawers and cupboard doors would mysteriously open themselves. This was not the side-effect of poor fitting or cheap appliances. This was a Poltergeist. You could literally walk from the kitchen into the dining room with everything “normal”, and, having forgotten something, immediately turn on your heel and re-enter the kitchen, to find all drawers and doors wide open. Yes it was spooky but there was not any sense of animosity or fear. It was more as if the ghost had a sense of humour and was having a bit of a laugh.

poltergeist

Things did, however, get a bit twitchy one night when we were entertaining friends from London. We were having a meal in the dining room and talking about ghosts and all things spooky. Admittedly, the wine was flowing quite freely. But, all of a sudden the CD, which was playing music, stopped. The cassette tape switched itself on. The cassette tape switched itself on to “record”. The cassette player was recording us. The cassette player was recording our conversation about ghosts. To be clear, to get the cassette player to tape you would have to first switch from CD to tape, and the hold down the play and record buttons at the same time. I can barely do this sober, so I am sure I couldn’t have done it in my inebriated state.

We went very quiet. We looked at each other and we laughed nervously. We turned the music back on. And, it happened again. A second time. Even writing about it now I can feel the hairs on the back of my head stand up and a shiver is passing down my spine. Spooky.

We now live in an old Cheshire Reformatory School, a boys’ prison, which is converted into nine properties. The prison was built in 1855 and housed some 76 convicted boys aged between about 6 and 16. Crimes ranged from local boys who had stolen bread, presumably as a way of getting the education that the school also offered, through to convicted murderers. Often these would be boys from as far afield as Manchester, Liverpool, Glasgow or London, presumably working on the premise that there would be less chance of them running away to get home.

Now we have never felt any presence here, C and I. Our next door neighbour did once claim that a ghost was moving things around his home but as this used to be our old house (we moved next door!) and we had had no such experience, we assumed he was joking. We didn’t like him very much. He was a nob and a fraudster. Worse, he used to stand in his lounge window wearing just skimpy underpants. Spooky.

More compelling, however, was the story of Holly. When Holly was just 3 years old or so and her family had just moved into the property. Holly asked her mom if she could go and play “with the boys in the courtyard”. Of course there were no boys. And, of course, little Holly knew nothing of the property’s history at that point. Spooky.

One house that does have a feeling about it, an eeriness, is Trivor. Trivor is a house in Monmouthshire which is owned by the father of a good friend of mine from university. My closest friends, and more recently their wives and partners, and subsequently their children, have visited the house every year for nigh on twenty years or so now. Trivor is mentioned in the Doomsday Book. Most of the current property dates back to the sixteenth century, however. A Catholic Priest was caught practising an illegal Mass there during the reign of Queen Elizabeth 1 and was apparently hanged, drawn and quartered. It must have smarted a bit. I guess something like that can leave a bit of an impression on an old place like that.

So, what about you? Do you have any ghostly tales that you wish to share?

I don’t but the house I lived in for the first three years of my life was reputedly haunted. Mam never felt comfortable living in it. The person who moved in after us claimed to have seen a ghost – who refused to respond to her questions. She described him to her landlord who said it sounded like a former gardner who lived in the cottage who was deaf mute.

    I’m personally still sceptical.

Thanks. I appreciate your comment on my post – ” Do ghosts really exist? ”

I stand for my belief that ghosts aren’t really existing in this world. They are just there as a consequence of our thinking. However, you wanted to know what they could do : they might wreck your lives, and also have considerable impact on your psyche as well!

And by the way, this post in an appreciable post of yours.

Fond as I am of logic and hard science, I have to admit to hearing ghosts, and even having one trying to break into the toilet I was in, knocking all the pictures off the walls.

One decided to crush a light shade when I was looking at it. What you get for having three psychics living in the same place.

Half my family have had experienes with this kind of thing. Makes it tough to be an atheist when a book hurls itself at you in an empty flat.

I do believe ghosts, i saw one in Erdington in 1970, I was 14 and on my way to a friends house early one school morning, In fact i remember the time, it was 7.30am, it was dark so must have been in the winter,

I saw a figure of a man Glowing “Orange”, no feartures just Glowing all over, It was there for i’d say around 20 seconds then it vanished, A friend of mine has also seen it, and its been in a local Erdington ghost Book.

I have to say, I’m a bit jealous. I have had a number of odd experiences with the spirit world aside from the guides that I’ve known, in one case, since a very early age. I work at a hotel in the Pittsburgh area and about a year ago I had a dream that someone died in the lobby of our hotel. You can imagine my surprise, the following day, when someone did die in the lobby. “Mr. B” (as I affectionately call him) is a trickster and, though it doesn’t bother me, it can get quite eerie at 4 in the morning when he decides to shuffle across the lobby or open and close doors at random. I’m the night manager and the only one in the hotel for the majority of the time. He typically calls the front desk from the phone next to the heated pool. But the pool is closed and all the doors locked at that time of the morning and nothing has been found to be electrically “unsound” about the phone’s set-up.

There are other experiences, but as I’m currently at work it seems that “Mr. B” is the only one that really matters right now. LOL It sounds like you’ve had some pretty interesting times with your former spirits. They’re just like you and I, so probably nothing to worry about, especially if their presence didn’t feel malicious in any way. Like “Mr. B”, I think most ghosts “just wanna have fun”. 🙂

    Dear Sidthekid,

Wow! It reminds me of The Shining.

Your dream experience reminded me of a time when I was quite young. My uncle came in on the way to starting his late shift. He was pale and shaking. He told the story that he had been approaching a traffic junction on foot, near our house, when he came across a lad in his 20s, looking dishevelled, head in hands, sat on the curbside. My uncle asked him if he was alright. The lad explained that he was but that there had been an accident at the junction and that someone had been killed. Just then my uncle was distracted by the sound of an accident at the junction……when he turned back, the boy had gone…..there was one fatality in the crash……a lad in his 20s!!!!

Thanks for your comment! Your experiences are very intriguing, and I have to admit to having odd things happen to me as well. Are they ghosts? I dont know. I hope so!

I was 12 and, being the nerd that I am, had been listening to a Halloween CD collection full of scary stories and eerie noises in the middle of July. I had left the CD in the player in my brothers room, which was right next to mine. One night I wake up from a dream and I hear the CD playing in the next room, loud and clear as day. I got up from bed, went to my brothers room, and went to turn off the CD player. When I got to it, I realized that the CD player was turned off and that the recording I had been hearing had stopped. I checked and discovered that it wasn’t even plugged into the wall.

    Spooky, huh?

    Again, thanks for the comment.

So, for the last few weeks I have been telling myself that I have been going crazy not wanting to acknowledge some of the really strange things going on in my house. I have been living here for over a year with my fiancé. When I first moved I noticed some odd things happening but for my own comfort chose to ignore them. Towels flying off towel racks, tupperware flying from cupboards. And one morning I was lying in bed fully awake trying to talk myself into getting up and starting my day when the window behind my bed was slid shut. And then one night my cat was very scared for some reason and was hiding under my bed so I went into my bedroom trying to comfort her and get her to come out when I started hearing tapping on that same window. My cat started growling and retreated even further under the bed. And just last night (or this morning) around 2:45-3:00 am I was in the bathroom brushing my teeth and getting ready to go to bed when all the sudden I hear “You give me something” by James Morrison. It was muffled as though it was coming from maybe my living room or kitchen so I thought that maybe my fiancé was listening to it on the computer. When I came out of the bathroom he was lying in bed and had no idea what I was talking about. We went through the house and checked anywhere it could have possibly come from and I live in the states so I know for a fact it did not come from outside somewhere because no one around here even knows who James Morrison is. I should have probably also mentioned that our current bedroom used to be the guest room and we had a friend of ours stay at our house for about a week before it was our room. He went in the bedroom around the same time almost 3:00 am and woke us up almost in tears saying he saw a black figure make it’s way through the bedroom very fast. I guess I am not as much scared as I am curious and wanting to know what is going on.

Quite a story Melissa. I hope it isn’t malevolent, whatever it is. James Morrison would not be the obvious music choice for a spook, methinks. Take care.

I do not think that it is anything with ill will or bad intentions. I think that it might be just be interested in the things going on around the house. But then again that might be arrogant to assume that it is interested in our lives but it’s the only explanation that I can come up with for the music given that James Morrison is one of my favorites and I play his albums all the time. I did a little bit of research and I am starting to think that the black figure that our friend saw was something completely different considering that spirits generally do not present themselves in a solid black form. It sounds to me that might be something like an astral energy or entity, but I could be wrong. Apparently astral entities are something like spiritual vampires that feed on negative energy to make themselves stronger. When I read about the astral entity it grabbed my attention because the description sounded just like what my friend had described, not to mention he is a very negative person in all aspects of his life. Apparently he is also seeing it in places other than just our house too and it has become a very often occurrence.

After moving into our current house and collecting our two cats from the chattery they explored around for a while and we found them, separately and on two different occasions staring up into the corner of our bedroom. Later, we heard a bang in the empty room above the lounge and on investigation found nothing to explain the crash. The following night a wooden ornament fell off a unit and onto the floor. Light bulbs dropped out of their fittings in the hall and a few other bangs and crashes happened. At exactly midnight one night, just as we were dropping off to sleep, the theme tune to the film, ‘Ghost’ started playing downstairs! We were not in the least bothered by any of this and happy to share our home with whatever was present until a few weeks later. My husband was decorating the hall, stairs and landing and the downstairs smoke detector went off. He stopped it but it went again so he undid the battery. Then the same thing happened with the upstairs one. After it happened twice more he called out, ‘Right I’ve had enough and I want you to go now.’ We haven’t had anything happen since.

Hi, was looking up similar or same experiences of ghosts on M6 and found your post here. Earlier this year, I was driving down to Blackpool from direction of Penrith. We had gotten just past Morecambe on the right. It was during the day, afternoon, clear. I noticed cars on other side of 55 were breaking. I looking in my rear view mirror to see a lad jumping over the central reservation in mid air far higher than the barrier that separates the roads. This was superhuman and I thought it was so unbelievable that it had to be a ghost. He was blonde -hair sun bleached as if, aged from 20-45 or thereabouts. It seemed like he had brought traffic on that side to a standstill but was obviously dodging traffic as if it was a game and then I saw him clearly in my mirror as if he was jumping hurdles over the barrier or what I recall was a barrier. He was in full colour as if he were alive but it couldn’t possibly be due to the speeding traffic on both sides. This gave me the heebyjeebies. This lad, his hair was waves, blonde and sunbleached as if he’d spent the whole summer at the beach, maybe as a surfer is what I describe. Maybe someone might relate to what I saw this day. Have you seen the same as me? This always haunts my mind this experience. Did he lose his life in a car accident just there? At least it will be documented here.
